YOUTH PROGRAMS
Intergenerational
learning and developing youth leadership is key to the sustainability of
Kalpulli Izkalli. It is encouraged in an effort to incorporate youth
participation in all program activities.
Youth programs are designed to develop young leaders and enhance young people's
understanding of the interdependency of the earth and humanity.
We utilize the strength of our culture and traditions to empower young people to
become active participants in community issues.
It is through the Youth Leadership and Development Campaign of the SW Network
that youth are supported and encouraged to maintain active involvement in the
work of the Kalpulli as well as participate in other SW Network campaigns,
projects and training.
Each summer, Kalpulli Izkalli youth also participate in the SW Network’s Summer
Youth Placement Project and the Youth Organizing Training Institute where they
develop skills in organizing, direct action, and movement building.
It is through Kalpulli Izkalli's youth programs that:
- Hundreds of youth have attended Kalpulli
Izkalli-sponsored activities such as local youth leadership conferences, trips
to Mexico to make historical links, summer classes through the Calmecac Nahui
Ollin (school of the four directions), and the South Valley Environmental
Justice Youth Media Project.
- Youth involvement has increased in resolution of EJ
issues
- Youth have implemented effective media outreach and
education tools
- Young people have organized poetry readings and
other cultural activities to encourage youth involvement.
- Young people are involved as apprentices with
practitioners of traditional medicine and ceremonial leaders.
- Current Kalpulli Youth Programs include the
Calmecac
Nahui Ollin (School of the Four Directions) and the South Valley Environmental
Justice Youth Media Project.
