Picture_004Intergenerational learning and developing youth leadership is key to the sustainability of Kalpulli Izkalli. It is encouraged in an effort to incorporate youth participation in all program activities.

Youth programs are designed to develop young leaders and enhance young people's understanding of the interdependency of the earth and humanity.

We utilize the strength of our culture and traditions to empower young people to become active participants in community issues.

YOUNG SCHOLARS FOR HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE 2011 PROGRAM

Young Scholars for Health and Environmental Justice is a summer youth internship program for youth ages 14 & 15. The program builds leadership among youth and encourages their understanding of the interconnection between Mother Earth, ourselves and all living things. As interns they are provided a stipend to participate in the Calmecac Nahui Ollin Project as learners and mentors to the younger youth 7-13 years. This year the Young Scholars assisted in developing the program for the Nahui Ollin Project based on the traditional teachings of the four elements, air, fire, water, and earth. They assist children with instructions and project assignments, and help with set-up and clean-up, lunch, and project activities. They participate in discussions and will receive training that includes issues facing young people today that impact their health and environment and how to organize to make the changes they want to see. The youth will participate in an end of program evaluation which will help further program development and a social media project that include, a web-page on Kalpulli Izkalli’s website, a power-point presentation, and a short video of the Nahui Ollin Project and the Young Scholars Program that will be used encourage other youth to take care of themselves and the earth.
