2011 Summer YOUTH Program - Calmecac Nauhui Ollin (School of the Four Directions/movement)

CalmecacFormDownload FlyerThis is a free Saturday learning and activities series at the Kalpulli Izkalli from 10:00am – 2:00pm for youth ages 7-14. The Calmecac Nahui Ollin is a summer youth program created to enhance children and youth's understanding of the interconnection between Mother Earth, ourselves and all living things. The program includes learning through hands-on activities such as herb walks, soap-making, gardening, nutrition, cooking and lots of fun and games. This year the pilot program "Young Scholars for Health and Environmental Justice" will participate in the Calmecac Nahui Ollin as interns to Kalpulli Izkalli.

Parents please arrive by 9:45 on Saturday, June 4, to register and sign travel and media forms. Lunch and drinks will be provided.

Saturday, June 4, 10:00am – 2:00pm

  • Introduction and orientation to Young Scholars for Health and Environmental Justice (youth ages 14&15). They need to be here by 9:30am every Saturday to help set up and will stay until 3:00pm.
  • Introduction and tour of Kalpulli Izkalli and the Nahui Ollin Project
  • Tonita Gonzales will present on the element of Fire and relationship to body, mind, and spirit and focus on nutrition.

Saturday, June 11, 10:00am – 2:00pm. Lunch and drinks will be provided.

  • Tonita Gonzales will present on the element of Water. Make sure your child brings an extra change of clothes as she/he may get wet.
  • This will be a field trip to the Gonzales farm in the north valley. We will transport the children.

Saturday, June 18, 10:00am – 2:00pm. Lunch and drinks will be provided.

  • Rusita Avila will present on the element of Air/Wind.
  • Wear comfortable clothing for learning breathing and meditation.
  • This will be a field trip to air monitoring stations in the south valley. We will transport the children.

Saturday, June 25, 10:00am – 12:00pm. Lunch and drinks

  • Sylvia Ledesma will present on the element of Earth.
  • We will go for an herb walk by the River.
  • We will transport the children.
  • We will make sack lunches for lunch on the river.
  • Upon return we will make soap from herbs picked.
