SOUTH VALLEY ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE YOUTH
MEDIA PROJECT (SVEJYMP)
The
South Valley Environmental Justice Youth Media Project began in 2002 as a model
to educate youth about environmental and health issues.
The project facilitates youth involvement in the resolution of these issues from
their perspective by engaging their participation in designing and implementing
effective media outreach and education tools for public awareness.
In 2003 the project produced a video, Illegal Dumping...Just Stop It!
with twenty high school students from the South Valley Academy and Rio Grande
High School. The project was in collaboration with the South Valley Partners for
Environmental Justice (SVPEJ) which includes the Rio Grande Community
Development Corporation and the Bernalillo County Environmental Health
Department, and UNM Community Environmental Health Program-School of Medicine (UNM).
The video is utilized by the SVPEJ's Illegal Dumping...Just Stop It!
campaign to encourage the general public to participate in addressing the issue
and engaging them in solutions to the problem.
The video was showcased by the New Mexico Environment Department, Solid Waste
Bureau on Environmental Day at the 2005 Legislative Session. The Bureau
continues to utilize the video for their statewide Illegal Dumping Summits.
In 2004, the SVEJYMP worked with participating youth in documenting the Calmecac
Nahui Ollin Project and will continue to do so in the 2005 program.
