Health Programs The Topahkal Traditional Medicine Clinic

kapulli_pix4

The Topahkal Clinic was originally established in 2001 by the Promotoras Tradicionales Project to provide a sacred space for the Promotoras Tradicionales to collectively offer healing work to families who are medically underserved, uninsured, and economically disadvantaged.

The Traditional Medicine Clinic offers a consultation, a consulta or platica, wherein the practitioner determines the appropriate steps in addressing the patient’s needs. The practitioner may refer the patient to other Practitioners of traditional medicine, as well as link the patient to other community health care services and programs.

The primary purpose of this project is to create a collective of community teachers and learners as Promotoras Tradicionales.

The major goals of the project are to:

  1. Expand capacity for community health education to low-income women and families in Bernallillo County
  2. Provide preventative health care services to women and their families, and
  3. Forge the link between health care providers, programs, advocates and traditional community healers.
